Welcome to Andrew Bird’s nineth solo outing—an album of surprisingly unfussy folk compositions augmented with his trademark layers of violins, slurred vocals, and multi-octave whistling. Recovering from emotional and physical exhaustion, Bird took to his family’s barn, laying down entire songs in a single take, friends filling in on whatever instrument the multi-tasking musician couldn’t play himself. As a result, Break It Yourself often plays like being front row at the world’s most engaging hootenanny. (via Andrew Bird: Break It Yourself (Mom Pop) | Under The Radar)

Over the course of the coming year UK newspaper The Guardian will be hosting a monthly concert series called “Sounds From a Room.” The performance webscasts are to take place in the recently built installation A Room for London, a one-bedroom boat situated on top of the roof edge of Queen Elizabeth Hall. Built by Living Architecture and designed by David Kohn Architects in collaboration with artist Fiona Banner, the boat is meant to serve as an actual hotel room throughout the majority of 2012. Each month however, it will also serve as a space of creativity, where a different musician, writer, or artist will be invited to stay for a weekend. In the case of the musical-inclined, the end of their residency concludes with a live performance. Kicking things off was violin maestro and pop songwriter Andrew Bird, whose latest album Break It Yourself is scheduled for release on March 6.
