Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
While at Coachella, Under the Radar caught up with M83 keyboardist (and sometimes contributing blogger) Morgan Kibby to discuss her solo project, White Sea. We learned that M83’s Anthony Gonzalez may appear on a forthcoming White Sea track. (via M83’s Anthony Gonzalez May Appear on a White Sea Track | Under The Radar)
God. Getting onto that plane in Singapore was hard. Luckily we all had rows to ourselves, it being a pretty empty flight, and we all slept soundly and arrived in London a lot less cranky than expected. Our first show of the European leg at Shepherd’s Bush Empire was full and surprisingly fun. I haven’t seen London get excited for anything we’ve done before, but this night was apparently an exception. From then on however, things went a bit downhill: The last two weeks have admittedly been a bit rough, and like so many of my other tour stumbles, this one also starts in Poland. Over the last year I’ve spilt more (digital) ink over Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming than any other album. It’s a fantastic trick that M83 frontman Anthony Gonzalez plays, heavily referencing childhood in his work. Deny M83, and you’re denying your childlike wonder of the world around you…at least, if your childhood was as 1980s-synth driven as mine was. Poland. Berlin. Amsterdam. Paris. London. Home stretch. NYC admittedly took every ounce of anything out of me, and after sleeping for a scant two hours on Thanksgiving, we piled into the van and headed to JFK. I would have done just about anything to sleep more, so I promptly collapsed into a pile of drool the moment we got on the plane. Have you gotten your copy of the Best of 2011 issue yet? What cover did you receive?
We had a double header last night in Seattle, and all I can say is: Wow. You have moments with an audience, no matter how many times you’ve played, weeks on end, where all of a sudden it all makes sense, and they finish your sentences, your whoops your hollers. Thank you Seattle, that was truly special. (via From the Road Part 2: White Sea’s Morgan Kibby on Tour with M83 | Under The Radar)
Hello friends. My name is Morgan Kibby and I play in M83. This is my tour diary. I’ll say this as a prologue: a tour diary is a tricky thing. Trying to convey the mundane, the exuberant, the duality of home versus travel, the solitary, the camaraderie… It is an exercise in itself to try and understand it in one’s own brain, let alone to try and convey the nuances to others. I look forward to deciphering and sharing these moments with you, and hope you enjoy. (via From the Road: White Sea’s Morgan Kibby | Under The Radar)
My first experience with M83 was some six years ago in a coffee shop at USC. He was busy pushing buttons, and refusing to stand on ceremony by actually acknowledging his audience. I was a student with a budding musical curiosity and a complete lack of earplugs. While it isn’t impossible to believe Anthony Gonzalez is the same musician that delivered Before the Dawn Heals Us, Wednesday night’s show at The Henry Fonda proved to be miles away from the cramped café where we first met.
